Jean Tottie, Founding Director and Chair
My role as Chair of the Life Story Network CiC (LSN) is to work with the Executive Team to ensure that we deliver our commitments and strive to grow the organisation on a firm foundation. I particularly focus on the ambassadorial role representing LSN and tide and making connections at a UK wide and regional level. I co-founded Life Story Network, after a 35 year career in health and social care, after seeing the benefits of life story work for my late father. I am currently a member of the Board of the National Dementia Action Alliance, Public Health England Dementia Governance Board, Dementia Expert Reference Group for Achieving Better Access to Mental Health Services (NHSE and NICE), Royal College of Nursing Nursing Advisory Group, a member of the Programme Board for ‘Effective Home Support in Dementia Care’ with University of Manchester, and a member of the Steering Group for the Evaluation of Specialist Nursing Support for carers of People with Dementia.
Ruth Eley, Founding Director
I am a Founder-Director and the Vice-Chair of Life Story Network. As the vice-chair of the Board, I support the Chair in ensuring that we fulfil our obligations as a social enterprise. I take a lead role in financial matters and assist with project management. I was inspired to help create LSN when I heard Ken Holt talking at a conference workshop about the life story he had written for his wife, who had dementia and lived in a care home. He told participants that he thought we needed a national network to spread the word about life story work across the country. Working in the Department of Health at the time, I was able to help bring some like-minded people together to work out how to realise Ken’s vision. I recently co-edited a book with Polly Kaiser about using life story work with people with dementia. It uses an evidence-based approach to explain the benefits of life story work, and how it can be used in different settings. I am currently Chair of the Liverpool Dementia Action Alliance, and the Liverpool Dementia Action Alliance Transport Group.
Anna Gaughan, Chief Executive
My role as Chief Executive is to provide the leadership and support for this fantastic team of people in driving forward the strategic development of Life Story Network. I am committed to forging and sustaining relationships with a broad range of organisations and networks locally, regionally and UK wide. I have worked in the field of health and social care for 30 years, starting my career as a nurse, and then holding a number of senior and Director level posts across the sector. I am proud to be one of the co-founders of the Life Story Network CiC and am an Associate with Manchester Business School / former Tutor on the NHS Elizabeth Garett Anderson (EGA) Leadership Programme. I value my own personal development and hold a first class BA Hons degree in Social Policy, a Masters in Health Care Leadership
(Distinction) and am a published author in the field of health care leadership
Thomas Hughes, Business Development Manager
I am the Business Development Manager for Life Story Network, and work across the team particularly with finance and communications to ensure the organisation has sustainable sources of income and a robust planning process. I have worked in the third sector for over 7 years and have experience of leading businesses, social enterprises and charities. I have broad experience working in senior leadership roles within operations and business development areas for organisations such as the Red Cross. I have an interest in how future technology, new economic models and new ways of working could transform society for the better as well as how corporate social responsibility could be better harnessed by the third sector.
Brian Denton, Finance Manager
I am the Finance & Resources Manager at Life Story Network, and I come from a long career in the Local Government and Higher Education Sectors, achieving senior financial management positions in both. As an accountant who has worked in the not for profit sector for virtually all of my career, I think my most important contribution will be to bring a practitioner’s eye to the financial management of Life Story Network.. However, I have also previously been a Governor of a secondary school, and a Trustee of a charity, so I have experience in giving time and energy
Pauline Burke, Admin Support
I provide administration support for Life Story

everything runs smoothly. For over 30 years, my working life has been spent in a PA/secretarial role.
