Your Story Matters  -Train the Trainers - Frequently Asked Questions

1. What will I get from the course?

You will be trained in delivering a one day introduction course ‘Your Story Matters' (YSM). YSM seeks to promote the mainstreaming of the use of life stories (as distinct from reminiscence work) which supports the practicable application and embedding of a human rights based approach to underpin person-centred care. It is an approach particularly relevant to people with dementia; as their illness progresses, their life story enables people around them to get to know and understand them beyond their dementia, giving them a means of engagement and communication which would otherwise be far more difficult.

2. Where will the training take place?

The first day of training for successful applicants will take place in Manchester on 10th January for Northern/Midlands based applicants or 11th January in London for those in the South. The follow up 2nd day of training for Northern/Midlands will take place in Manchester on the 27th March and 28th March in London for those based in the  South .

3. Who will pay my travel costs?

Delegates are responsible for their own travel costs. The Department of Health are paying the fees to access the course and for the supply of the supporting training materials.

4. Do I have to have previous experience of delivering training to get a place on the course?

We expect you to already have a designated role or responsibility for the delivery of training within your organisation. In ticking the box to indicate you have the support of your line manager, you are indicating that you have been granted the necessary time to attend the 2 workshops and to deliver the YSM training. You should have an understanding of the needs of people with dementia and be able to deliver the training to between 6 and 10 people within the timescales outlined. Each place offered will be selected to ensure that the influence and geographical location of YSM trainers optimises the aim of the delivery of the introductory course across England.

5. If I apply now but then cannot attend will I be liable to any costs?

Applying for a place carries no liability to any costs. Applicants are expected to have the support of their line manager. Applying for a place does not guarantee a place on the training.

Successful applicants will be offered a place on the course after the closing date. If at this time, you decide not to take up a place on the course and you inform us, no costs will be incurred. Should you accept a place and subsequently not attend then an administration fee of £75 will be applicable.

6. How much time will my training take up?

There will be a short on-line pre-course assessment prior to the one day face to face training session which will introduce you to the course and the supporting materials on 10th or 11th January 2012. This will be followed up with online learning reflection exercises. There will be a further one day face to face session towards the end of your training and after you have delivered your introductory course to between 6 and 10 people. This will take place on either the 27th or 28th March 2012 and will be followed by a final on-line assessment.

7. What will the online learning consist of?

Following the first face to face session you will be given access to an online virtual learning environment (e-learning) for trainers and full instructions on how to use it. This will include resources and materials you used in the face to face day, materials to use in delivering training, videos and presentations. You will need to undertake a short assessment to demonstrate your understanding of the course content.

You will also be given access and instructions on using an online life story book, which all those undertaking Your Story Matters will have chance to complete.

8. What is expected of me?

Once you have undertaken the first face to face session and completed the online assessment you will be expected to deliver the one day introductory training of Your Story Matters to between 6 and 10 people in your organisation before the end of March 2012. This could be as one group session or individually. See the Introduction training FAQ`s for more details of the course.

9. What will the LSN supply to help me deliver this?

We will supply you with a link to our online booking system for your delegates to register for the course.

The Department of Health have funded the production of training materials for trainers and delegates. The LSN will supply you with all the necessary slides, delegate packs, individual access to the online virtual learning environment for each delegate and access to complete the online life story book and for each delegate to receive a hard printed copy once completed. Your delegates will also undertake a short assessment online. On successful completion of the course, delegates will be able to print off a course completion certificate.

Trainers will be expected to choose and supply their own suitable training venue.

Support for trainers, along with a discussion area to share ideas and successes will be provided via the online virtual learning environment area.

10. When I have trained 10 people, can I train more?

Under the terms of the your Story Matters project, The Department of Health have provided funding for between 6 and 10 places per trainer to access the materials, to access the virtual learning environment, for delegates to make an online life story book and to receive a printed hard copy of the completed book.
There will be an opportunity to become a Life Story Network C.I.C licensed trainer to be able to deliver this training to more candidates in your organisation. Further details will be available shortly
