Why Do Family Carers Matter?
The All Party Parliamentary Group on Dementia (APPG) stated in their recent manifesto (March 2015), that “for far too long, carers of people with dementia have been the forgotten heroes, looking after their loved ones through challenging circumstances, often with little or no support. Without them our health and social care system simply wouldn’t be able to cope!”
There are currently 670,000 unpaid Family Carers of People with Dementia providing 1.34 billion hours of unpaid care. This saves the UK economy £11.6 billion, which accounts for nearly half of the total cost of dementia care.
It’s therefore unsurprising that two thirds of carers report having suffered from depression as a result of caring due to experiencing greater strain and stress than carers of other older people. The consequences of carers’ health breaking down is multifaceted, resulting in additional costs to the NHS, increased likelihood of more critical illness and the potential for a loved one with dementia to require more intensive support, either at home or in residential care, the need to improve the lives and experiences of carers of people with dementia becomes even more pressing.
We want to provide family carers of people with dementia with the chance to have a life alongside their caring role, but to do this we need your help, donating to tide – ‘together in dementia everyday’, allows us to continue and expand our vital work for family carers of people with dementia.
