Use of 3G Mobile Phones in Life Story Work

Bookmark and Share

Aims of the service/innovative practice:

To facilitate life story and reminiscence work with care home residents by accessing the vast library of information on the internet using an iPhone (or similar)

What have been the challenges and solutions in setting up and maintaining the innovative practice?

It's easy!, find a quiet space, don't allow interruptions and ask questions e..g where did you used to live ? using a 3G mobile phone you can access for example Google maps or Google earth to show older people where they used to live, work, play, go dancing etc, it is a great tool to facilitate life story discussions and aids the process of producing a life story album.YouTube also provides a vast selection of old Pathe newsreels and early TV clip

Outcomes (including how this was measured, evaluated and lessons learned):

Every time I have used this technique it has resulted in a flood of reminiscence from the person I am working with

Plans for the future (eg sustainability):

I plan to expand this work using a laptop and video projector to lead group reminiscence sessions and life story work
